Tonight it’s time for the 2015 version of the yearly outside hockey game in the NHL: Winter Classic. This year the two teams playing are Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks. They play at the Nationals Park in Washington. It should be an exciting match-up with Washington’s Ovetjkin and Bäckström trying to get through the defenses of Chicago’s dynasty. Chicago recently won the Stanley Cup in 2010 and 2013.
Earlier Winter Classics
In its current form, the Winter Classic has been played since 2008:
2008 Buffalo Sabres 1-2 Pittsburgh Penguins (shootout)
2009 Chicago Blackhawks 4-6 Detroit Red Wings
2010 Boston Bruins 2-1 Philadelphia Flyers (sudden death)
2011 Pittsburgh Penguins 1-3 Washington Capitals
2012 Philadelphia Flyers 2-3 New York Rangers
2013 Moved to 2014 because of lockout
2014 Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 Detroit Red Wings (shootout)
Road to the Winter Classic
Every year since 2011 HBO has made a documentary-series following the both teams participating in the Winter Classic. This year EPIX is making a similar series. Those of you that haven’t seen the earlier version of the series we can recommend it strongly! Do a Google or YouTube on 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic.
