2 goals for Suarez in Barcelona’s 200th game in Champions League

The rest of the first leg in the Round of 16 of Champions League 2014/15 were played this week and below are the results. Click here for the results from last week.

Arsenal 1-3 Monaco

A disciplined Monaco could take the lead away from home against Arsenal after 0-1 in the first half. After 53 minutes of play 0-2 came. Arsenal managed to get a goal in the first overtime minute, but this was the Monaco evening: In the fourth overtime minute they set the final score 1-3. Now Monaco has a great shot reaching the quarterfinals, having the home-field advantage in the return meeting. This season is the first time Monaco in the Champions League since 2005/06.

Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Atlético Madrid

Last year’s finalist Atlético had no fun evening in Germany. They did a strong first half but had to make two changes after injuries. In the second half Leverkusen scored 1-0 and Atlético had to play with 10 men after a penalty. In the return leg in Madrid they have to try to turn the series without Tiago and Godin who are suspended.

Juventus 2-1 Dortmund

Juventus lead Serie A and are Italy’s hope in the Champions League. Last time an Italian team won the tournament was in 2007 when Milan beat Liverpool in the final. After 13 minutes played, they took the lead, just to see it being an even game five minutes later. 2-1 came just before the break and it was also the end result after a goalless second half.

Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona

Suárez had a great evening in Manchester with two goals in the protocol after the first half. City got a vital equalizer in the second half. In overtime Barcelona could have had another goal when Lionel Messi got the chance from the penalty spot. Hart saved though and Messi also missed the rebound. This was Barcelona’s 200th game in the Champions League. They share second place with Manchester United in the marathon league. Real Madrid is in the lead with 207 games. With Manchester City’s goal today, Barcelona have allowed a total of 200 goals in the tournament, 1 goal per game. Don’t you love statistics?

El Clásico and other interesting football this week

El Clasico

This week offer some exciting football with El Clásico as the main event. Be prepared when Luis Suarez brings some bite to Barcelona’s offensive play when they face Real Madrid, in Madrid Saturday October 25th.

Champions League

Elsewhere, in the Champions League Manchester City travels to Russia to face CSKA Moscow Tuesday 22nd. Wednesday 23rd Liverpool plays Real Madrid home on Anfield. Also on Wednesday Arsenal visit Anderlecht hoping to claim the group D win.

U21 European Champions

The qualifiers for the Euro U21 2015 is finished, these teams will enter the tournament next summer. The top four teams will get places in the Olympics in Brazil 2016:

Sweden
England
Germany
Czech Republic (host)
Portugal
Italy
Serbia
Denmark

Sweden made it to the tournament with a spectacular 4-1 home win against France. They were down with 0-2 from the first game but managed to come back and are now qualified for the U21 Championships. While the competition is fierce, the tournament is rather short, with a group phase followed by semifinals, which means anything can happen. In Sweden we of course hope for a spot in the Olympics where each U21-team can have three players above age. That would be a perfect finish for our superstar forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the national team, especially since he missed the opportunity to take part in this summer’s FIFA World Cup. A spot in the U21 Championships is also important for Sweden because it shows that we have some younger players that can continue to deliver in the national team when they grew older. As a small nation we do not have a large population and therefore need all the players we can get in our national teams. Soccer, together with hockey is two national sports, but we also have many individual athletes in nordic skiing et.c.

Chicken Swedes are looking forward to continuous football action despite the winter is coming!

UEFA 2016 qualifiers are up this week

UEFA

This week we are looking forward to some exciting International Soccer as the race to reach the finals of Euro 2016 continues. The 2016 European Championships are played in France in the summer of 2016 (June 10-July 10). As they are the host nation, “Les Bleus” are already qualified for the tournament. The rest of the European teams are battling for 23 spots. In the qualifiers, the 53 teams are divided into 9 groups. From each group, the first and second placed teams are directly qualified to the championships together with the best 3rd placed team. The other eight 3rd placed teams have to play play-offs from which the last 4 teams advances to Euro 2016.

The British teams

England, at the top of Group E after a victory against Switzerland, are looking to gain an advantage in their goal difference when they welcome San Marino to Wembley Thursday October 9th. Wales beat Andorra in the last round and they are facing Bosnia and Herzegovina who is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing defeat against Cyprus (!) In Group D, Scotland faces Georgia at Hampden Park, while the Republic of Ireland entertain Gibraltar in Dublin. Northern Ireland take on the Faroe Islands at Windsor Park. Against these opponents, the British teams should come out on top.

Sweden vs Russia

Another interesting match-up are Sweden against Russia at Friends Arena, Stockholm Sweden. The winner here gets a big advantage and will become favourites for the group victory. Sweden was the last team to beat Spain in a qualifier game, that was in 2008. Spain is facing Slovakia in Zilina. Will the swedes prevail or will it be a sad reminder of the Swedish king Charles XII defeat against Russia at Poltava in 1709? Hopefully they have what it takes to tame the Russian bear this time.

The qualifiers are played 9,10 and 11th of October so we have a great weekend of great international football to look forward to.

These countries will host the UEFA 2020 championships

Fotbolls-EM

Now it’s decided what stadiums that will be used for the European Football Championship 2020. 2012 the UEFA president Michel Platini suggested that the 2020 championships should be played in more than one or two countries. The championships will be held in thirteen European cities as seen below. This is the first time the championships are divided by this number of hosts. The Euro 2012 was hosted by Poland and Ukraine. The current champions are Spain who also won the Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria.

These are the hosting arenas:

England, London: Wembley, here comes the final and semi-finals will be held.
Germany, Munich: Allianz Arena, a quarterfinal and three group matches.
Azerbaijan, Baku: Olympic Stadium, a quarterfinal and three group matches.
Russia, St. Petersburg: New Zenit Stadium, a quarterfinal and three group matches.
Italy, Rome: Olympic Stadium, a quarterfinal and three group matches.
Belgium, Brussels: National Arena, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Denmark, Copenhagen: The park, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Ireland, Dublin: Aviva Stadium, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Holland, Amsterdam: Amsterdam Arena, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Romania, Bucharest: National Stadium, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Scotland, Glasgow: Hampden Park, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Spain, Bilbao: San Mames Barria, one round of 16 and three group matches.
Hungary, Budapest: New Puskas Stadium, (unclear which games).

This is an interesting idea for sure, even if there is some disappointment in Sweden for not getting a single match in the Euro 2020. It was quite a while since we hosted a large tournament now. In 1992 the European Championships were held in four Swedish cities. Then, Denmark won the gold after defeating Germany in the final. Sweden got eliminated by Germany in the semifinal after two goals by Karl-Heinz Riedle.

Meanwhile, we follow the qualifiers for the European Football Championship in France in 2016 where the first round just finished.

England faces Switzerland in the first round of the UEFA qualifiers

UEFA

7-9th of September it’s time for the first round of the qualifiers for UEFA 2016 in France. We have some interesting match-ups to look forward to. For those of us who have abstinence from this summer’s World Championships, the qualifiers will sure supply our needs of great soccer.

Switzerland vs England

Roy Hodgson’s England will meet Switzerland in Basel. The Three Lions have much to prove after this summers World Championships where they didn’t even make the playoffs. Switzerland made a good World cup and will start the qualifiers full of confidence. It is important for both teams to get a good start in the qualifiers.

Germany vs Scotland

The current world champions Germany will start their qualifiers home against Scotland. Germany lost a friendly game against the world-cup runner-up Argentina earlier this week, they should however be able to win against the Scotts without too much of a hazzle. With the World Cup win, Spain’s dominating dynasty came to an end. They won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships as well as the 2010 World Cup. Perhaps it is Germany who will be the new dynasty. Nevertheless, European Football have a large portion of good teams with different playing styles and mentality right now.

Austria vs Sweden

Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his 50th goal in the national team earlier this week. That made him Sweden’s top goal scorer of all time. Sweden will play Austria in Vienna monday 8th September. In the qualifier draw, Sweden managed to dodge the hardest European teams. Austria and Russia is the main opponents in their group and it should be some even matchups against both these teams. Don’t forget to make some bets during the qualifiers. There are some good combinations that can raise good odds and big wins. Be sure to check out our bonus offers at the start page.

Which team will win La Liga 2014/2015?

El Clasico

Last year, Atlético Madrid won the Spanish La Liga somewhat unexpected. Thus they broke the dominance of the giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona’s. Atlético were even close to winning the Champions League against Real Madrid but big brother just managed to score the equalizer in stoppage time and win the final game in overtime.

Here we examine the three top candidates for the league title a little bit closer:

Atlético Madrid

Last year’s league-winner has lost some men. Trustworthy goalscorer Diego Costa will be missing and so will the steady goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois be. Atlético has reinforced the team with a couple of offensive players: Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann.

In the 2013/2014 season it was not thanks to a team full of superstars they won La Liga. It was thanks to hard work and an unmatched work ethic. Coach Diego Simeone is this team’s key figure. If he can squeeze out of the same effect from this year’s team as last year, then Atlético Madrid will be a team to be reckoned with in both the Spanish league and the Champions League this year.

However, it will be much tougher season 2014/2015. No one will underestimate the team anymore. The fact that they won the league last year, they will be chased, it will be a scalp to beat Atlético Madrid for all the teams.

FC Barcelona

Barcelona has, as usual, an interesting team when you look at their lineup. Or how about striker Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez? We choose, however, to put a question mark on the team’s midfield. In this summer’s World Cup the Spanish game was brutally run over and by the German style of play. Will Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez deliver? The question is whether FC Barcelona need to re-think their strategies to keep up with the top European football in 2014?

Real Madrid

Just like Barcelona, Real Madrid has a team filled with superstars this year, just like we are accustomed to. In their midfield we find two exciting new acquisitions who both did an excellent football World Cup in Brazil: The German world champion Toni Kroos and Colombian top-goalscorer James Rodriguez. Among the team’s attackers, it is hard not to highlight the superstar Ronaldo. However, if you look at how the teams other players performed in the World Cup it’s a wounded team, especially if you look at the defencemen. Can Sergei Ramos, Pepe and Marcelo recover from their fiascos in Brazil 2014 and reload for a fine season in their club team?

This year’s edition of Real Madrid feels like all or nothing: If you get together a hungry team of superstars will they be lethal. If not, they will at most end up third place in the spanish league and get a travelpass home from the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

The UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers

UEFA

The UEFA 2016 European Championships are played in France which is thus qualified as the home nation. The other European teams will fight for the remaining 23 spots in the tournament. The qualifiers are played in eight groups where the teams that finishes first and second horse goes directly to the UEFA 2016 along with the team with the best third place. The remaining teams that finishes in third place in their groups play a separately playoff for the remaining spots in the tournament.

The qualifying groups with comments:

Group A:
Netherlands, Czech Republic, Turkey, Latvia, Iceland, Kazakhstan

The bronze medalists from the 2014 World Cup, Netherlands, are favorites. There should not be any team that can match their skills. We believe that Turkey gets the second place.

Group B:
Bosnia & Herzegovina, Belgium, Israel, Wales, Cyprus, Andorra

Belgium made it to the quarterfinals in the 2014 World Cup and there’s no reason to believe they do not win this group and go to the European Championship together with Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Group C:
Spain, Ukraine, Slovakia, Belarus, Macedonia, Luxembourg

After Spain’s departure in the group stage of the World Cup their whole team and style of play is questioned. We still think they manage to win this group, closely chased by Ukraine and Slovakia.

Group D:
Germany, Ireland, Poland, Scotland, Georgia, Gibraltar

World Cup winner Germany will continue their winning streak. They will win the group. The race for the second place in the group will be a tough fight between the british teams and Poland.

Group E:
England, Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, San Marino

Switzerland made it to the finals of the World Cup, unlike England. We believe that both teams make it to the Championship in 2016 but we not dare to guess which team will win the group ..

Group F:
Greece, Hungary, Romania, Finland, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands

Greece is usually able to perform well before and in tournaments. They reached the knockout-stage of the World Cup. Of course they will make it to the European Championship but the question is which of the teams from the group that will follow them? Is it Finland’s time this year? Northern Ireland should never be ruled out. Hungary and Romania are good teams. Tough group!

Group G:
Russia, Sweden, Austria, Montenegro, Moldova, Liechtenstein

The swedes did a decent qualifier before the 2014 World Cup but lost to Portugal in the playoffs. This year they will probably battle their way to the 2016 European Championships followed by Russia. Watch out for Austria!

Group H:
Italy, Croatia, Norway, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Malta

An interesting group where World Cup participants Italy and Croatia can be considered as favorites.

Group I:
Portugal, Denmark, Serbia, Armenia, Albania

The Danish team is assigned in a tough group where they battle with Portugal and Serbia for the group win. Christiano Ronaldo’s Portugal’s fiasco in the World Cup raises some question marks around the team.

We summarize: The 2014 World cup in Brazil

Now it’s been a few weeks since this summer’s festival of football ended. At Chicken Swedes we have had a few days of vacation where we had time to visit FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. Now, however, we are back again with the latest news from the sports and entertainment world. Here is an outline of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Expectations

As the 2014 World Cup was played in football’s homeland Brazil, expectations were high both on the arrangement itself and that the home team would perform well (= win the tournament). Other favorites beforehand were the Argentina with Lionel Messi and Spain who won the last World Cup and the last two European Championships.

Group stage

Group A

In Group A, Brazil got a good start with a 3-1 win against Croatia. They then played a goal-less draw against Mexico and won against Cameroon. The group victory was thus secured. Mexico came second in the group and reached the knockout-stage.

Group B

Group B started with an unexpected goal-explosion. Netherlands beat last world cup-winner Spain with 5-1! After another Spanish defeat to Chile (0-2) their dynasty was over.

Holland and Chile went through as Spain got a consolation win against Australia. The Netherlands felt like a gold candidate again this year, they got the silver in the 2010 tournament after a loss against Spain in the final game.

Group C

In Group C Colombia did short work of their opponents and won the group with a maximum of 9 points. Greece managed to secure a place in the knockout-round with a late goal against Ivory Coast.

Group D

The English team was unfortunately one of the year’s biggest disappointments and ended up last in a tough group where they are drawn against Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. Costa Rica won unexpected but convincing and went on to the knockout-stage together with Uruguay.

In the deciding match between Uruguay and Italy a notable event took place when Uruguay’s Luis Suarez bit (!) Italy’s defenseman Giorgio Chiellini. This led to Suarez being suspended for the remainder of the tournament. The game got even Italy a player sent off and there were many who questioned the judges afterwards.

Group E

In Group E confident France and Switzerland went through in an “easy” group with Honduras and Ecuador. France’s offensive impressed many and revived some memories of their dynasty around the new millennium with victories in both the European and World Championships.

Group F

In Group F, expectations were high on Argentina. Opponents were Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Nigeria which must be regarded as an easy draw. Indeed Argentina won the group with three straight wins, without convincing, it was three odd goal victories. Positive was that the team’s big star Lionel Messi was behind most of the goals. Nigeria managed to grab the second place in the group and advanced to the knockout-stage.

Group G

In Group G, many thought, including us, that it would be about a settlement between Joachim Löw’s German machine and Portugal with its star Christiano Ronaldo.

In the first game of the group Germany showed the world what was to come. After the first half against Portugal they led with 3-0. The end result was written to 4-0 to the Germans. Unlike Sweden in the qualifiers Portugal could not make four straight goals in the second half.

Portugal did not even advance to the playoffs which is considered to be a fiasco. Instead, it was the U.S. that grabbed the second place in the group.

Group H

This group may be considered one of those who held the lowest class in the World Championship. Sure, Belgium had a decent team on paper and Russia are usually able to show some quality but overall there are many good teams, mostly European who had been able to move on from this group, any day. We refer in particular to Sweden, Denmark, but also Turkey.

Belgium finished first in the group and went through together with Algeria.

Knockout-stage

It was time for the playoffs. 32 teams had become 16.

Round of 16

Brazil v Chile: The home nation were drawn against Chile who had impressed the world in the group stage but have had a dismal playoff-record against Brazil. The game went to penalties and Brazil barely made it to the quarter finals.

Colombia v Uruguay: Colombia was a clear favorite against a disputed Uruguay without suspended striker Suarez. Indeed Colombia won 2-0 and went on to the quarterfinals.

France v Nigeria: The French made short work of Nigeria and could relatively easily get to the quarterfinals.

Germany v Algeria: Here the Germans were soaring favorites but Algeria resisted firmly. The game went into overtime after a goal-less 90 minutes and Germany could eventually win with 2-1. Algeria was the last african team to leave the tournament.

Netherlands v Mexico: Two teams that had played convincingly the group stage would now battle for a place in the quarter finals. Both teams played well but the game was decided when the Netherlands got a disputed penalty after Arjen Robben had thrown himself in the penalty area.

Costa Rica v Greece: Costa Rica was a positive surprise in the group stage and had won the hearts of many. In this game against Greece the shootout took them through to the quarter-finals.

Argentina v Switzerland: Switzerland was a hard nut to crack for Argentina. Their defensive play was intact and impenetrable. In the end it felt fair though that Argentina’s Di Maria could make the game-winning-goal in overtime.

Belgium v USA: After a goalless draw at full-time, the match went into overtime where all three goals were scored, just as the game between Germany and Algeria. Belgium went ahead and the end result was written to 2-1

Quarterfinals

Brazil v Colombia: Once again Brazil managed to get a narrow win (2-1) against south american opposition. However, it was a costly victory when the superstar Neymar was injured at the end of the game. He could not play any more in the tournament. Additionally Silva became suspended in the semifinal.

France v Germany: In the last game, Germany had knocked out France’s former colony Algeria with the odd goal. In the quarterfinals they got another odd goal victory (1-0) in a slow and uneventful game. Were the Europeans affected by the south american climate? In the semifinal the host nation Brazil waited..

Netherlands v Costa Rica: Another quarterfinal meeting between Europe and South America. It required a shootout to secure a Dutch semi-final place. Costa Rica who had impressed the world with the group win was now out of the tournament.

Argentina v Belgium: Argentina scored 1-0 already in the eighth minute, and that was the result after 90 minutes of game time.

Semifinals

In the semifinals we had two European and two South American teams, including the host nation Brazil. Good for the tournament!

Brazil v. Germany: In one of football history’s worst over runs ever the German machine crushed a confused Brazil. After the first half it was already 5-0 to the germans and the end result had probably been two digits if they didn’t slow down the pace in the second half, where “only” scored two goals and Brazil had to do a consolation goal in the final minute.

The Brazilian fiasco was a fact. They had lost in a humiliating way in a game where virtually nothing worked for them. In addition, they had disgraced himself at home. This is a wound in the Brazilian soccer spirit that will take a long time to heal.

Netherlands v Argentina: Unlike the first semifinal became a tight game that required a penalty shoot-out to be decided. Both teams played good defense and did what they could to try to get to anything done offensively. Closest was Netherland’s Robben who was close to score at the end of the game.

Argentina won the game on penalties after razor-sharp and determined penalty kicks. In the final game Germany waited for them.

Third place game

Brazil v Netherlands: In the bronze game Brazil played to restore some of the glory that is lost in the semifinal. However, Netherlands could take the lead after only three minutes. The end result was written to 3-0 to the Dutch who were able to secure the bronze.

The Final

Germany v Argentina: Before the finale there was much talk about Germany’s crushing of Brazil. How would Argentina stand up against the German machine? While Argentina had shown up a nice defensive play in the semi-final against Netherlands but what about their attacking game? It was now up to superstar Lionel Messi and his friends to show themselves from their best side.

In the final game Germany got possession but didn’t manage to break through Argentina’s defenses. Argentina got some good opportunities every now and then but didn’t manage to score. The first half was goalless.

In the second half the game continued in much the same stance. Germany took over more of the possession but failed to create some really sharp chances. Argentina defended well and created the odd chance every now and then. It felt like both teams followed their game-plan. Although they failed to score any goals both teams kept to their basics and played “their” games out there.

The match went into extra time. In the 88 minute german coach Joachim Löw had substituted the legendary Miroslav Klose for striker Mario Götze. It would prove to be a wise choice. In the second extra time half Götze got the ball in a good position. In an elegant way, he took it down, turned around and put it into the net. 1-0 to Germany with seven minutes left to play!

The Germans held out and won the long-awaited world championship gold. The last time they won the gold was in Italy 1990.

A Final Analysis

The 2014 World Championship in Brazil gave us many good matches. The tournament kept overall good class where even some of the teams that were considered “inferior” could threaten the giants of football. Meanwhile many favorites fell already in the group stage. We expected that teams like Portugal, England, Spain and Italy would go much further. Now, these teams have to go home and take some time to think about how to innovate in a changing football world: How do you keep up with the new kind of quick football that is based on speed and action, how do you score on tight defenses and how do you stop tireless team-machines like Germany anno 2014?

The arrangement surrounding the World Cup was beautifully and professional. Judges efforts have been decent with a few exceptions.

Regarding Brazil’s departure in the semi-finals: there is not much else to say than that they simply wasn’t better than the 4th team overall this year. Germany and Argentina were worthy final teams and Holland deserved the bronze medal.

Now we look forward to the 2016 European Championships!
