Will Juventus win their 5th consecutive Serie A 2015/16?

live stream football

In 2014/15 Juventus won their 4th consecutive Scudetto together with Copa Italia. They reached the final in Champions League where they lost against Barcelona. Will they manage to win their 5th Serie A in a row this season?

Transfers to and from Juventus this summer

After last season, Italian veteran player Andrea Pirlo left Juventus for Major League Soccer and New York. Carlos Tevez was another heavy loss. He left for play with Boca Juniors in South America. However, young striker Paulo Dybala will join Alvaro Morata on top in Tevez absence. Also, Croatian attacker Mario Mandzukic joined Juventus from Atletico Madrid this year. The midfield looks stable with names like the talented Paul Pogba and Roberto Pereyra. Many are hoping that Kingley Coleman will have his breakthrough in his outer midfield position this season. Hopefully he can learn from German veteran Sami Khedira who joined Juventus this season as a free transfer. Khedira was a part of Germany’s gold winning team in FIFA World Cup 2014. As usual, the now 37-year old Gianluigi Buffon is guarding the net.

Roma is the biggest rival

Last year Juventus won Serie A 17 points before Roma and they are the favourites this year as well. Roma has placed second in the Italian League two years in a row. They won their last Scudetto in 2001 and has finished second six times since then. They have got reinforcements in players like Edin Dzeko and Mohammed Sallah this year but the question is whether they can challenge “the old lady” Juventus. Roma’s veteran Fransesco Totti is making his 24th season in Serie A this year. Another contender is Napoli who lost coach Rafa Benitez to Real Madrid but have got an interesting replacement in Maurizio Sarri who performed miracles with Empoli. Napoli have three new players that might be the reinforcement they need to stop letting in so many goals (they let in 54 goals in Serie A last season, that’s the highest number of allowed goals among the teams at the top of the league): Goalkeeper Pepe Reina from Bayern Munich, Allan from Udinese and Calcio and Mirko Valdifiori. Last years 3rd place team and Copa Italia finalist Lazio might be worth to watch out for this year as well. Inter has dropped like a rock since Jose Mourinho left the club but head coach Roberto Mancini have done some good transfers this year, such as Jovetic and Geoffrey Kondogbia. Milan’s new coach, Sinisa Mihajlovic is placing his money on offensive players like Carlos Bacca from Sevilla and Andrea Bertolacci from Roma. Some rumors place Swedish attacker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Milan this year, but he still has a year left on his contract with Paris SG.

As things are now, chances are Juventus will win their 5th consecutive Scudetto without too much fuzz. However, we are willing to place a bet on Napoli as the top contender thanks to their coach Sarri. Serie A starts August 23.

Premier League 2015/16 predictions

English Football

August 8 the 2015/16 Premier League will start and the question on everyone’s mind is who is standing as the final winners of England’s greatest football league next year. Here are the experts’ top tips along with current odds for league winners and top goal scorers..

Chelsea favorites for the league title

The experts are virtually unanimous – Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea will win the Premier League 2015/16. Nine out of ten writers at the Telegraph Sport are holding Chelsea as winners. The main contenders Manchester teams (City and United) and Arsenal. While Chelsea won the league last year, we are betting our money on Arsenal this year. They have a solid team and won the FA cup last season. Which team wins the league will of course be decided by results among the top rated teams. Below are some interesting match dates:

August 15: Manchester City – Chelsea
September 12th: Manchester United – Liverpool
October 24: Manchester United – Manchester City
November 7: Arsenal – Tottenham
December 28: Manchester United – Chelsea
April 16: Chelsea – Manchester City
May 7: Manchester City – Arsenal

The first round of fixtures get underway at Old Trafford on Saturday, August 8, when Man Utd welcomes Tottenham in the lunch-time kick-off. Louis van Gaal’s men began with defeat this time last year and will be eager to make a statement about their credentials for the rest of the season this time around. Elsewhere, defending champions Chelsea begin their title defence at home to Swansea in the evening game. On Sunday, Arsenal will hope to make a strong start to their bid for a first Premier League title since 2004 as they clash with West Ham, whilst Liverpool (without Steven Gerrard) look for redemption as they return to the Potteries following their 6-1 defeat to Stoke on the final day of last season. The opening week draws to a close on Monday as West Brom play host to Man City.

USA won FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015

The final of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup was a replay of the 2011 World Cup final and the 2012 Olympic final between Japan and the United States. The teams had one victory each against each other before the final (Japan won the World Cup in 2011 and the US Olympics 2014) and the question now was who would get win number two in what has become a clash of the titans and a classic encounter in women’s football. We did not have to wonder for long since USA and Carli Lloyd gave us answers immediately.

The final

Team USA started the match at a furious pace. Rapid runs and hearty passes. The first goal came after only three minutes from Carli Lloyd in the Japanese penalty box. She also made 2-0 two minutes later. After only five minutes of play, the United States had a firm grip of the final. Japan was not recognizable. They were passive in their defense and appeared to be shaken. United States continued to put on pressure in the offensive game. Lauren Holiday scored 3-0 in the 14th minute. Lloyd completed a hat-trick with a goal from the half the field in the 16th minute. After just over a quarter of an hour played of the final, the match was pretty much over even if Japan got a consolation goal through Yuki Ogimi in the 27th minute. Maybe someone had thoughts of Sweden’s match against Germany from 4-0 to 4-4 in World Cup qualifiers last year when USA scored an own goal a few minutes into the second half. Those thoughts disappeared quickly, however, when Tobin Heath put the 5-2 a few minutes later which also became the final score.

Road to the final

If we take a look at how the teams were drawn in the tournament we get a better understanding of why the final match was such an uneven match. FIFA has not been known to promote sportsmanship and fair play recently and Women’s World Cup 2015 is no exception. To enhance the tournament’s PR, the home team Canada was probably given an easier draw to make them go further in the playoffs. Canada, however, were eliminated by England in the quarterfinals, while Japan has met relatively light resistance in the play offs: Netherlands, Australia and England. The United States made the final after beating Colombia, China and Germany. The true final was perhaps the semifinal between USA and Germany which sadly got decided by questionable decisions by the referee. Despite this, however, we have experienced a nice football tournament in Canada this summer. More nations than earlier has been involved and challenged for places in the play offs and medals. The bronze went to England who beat Germany, something the English men’s team have had problems with in the major tournaments.

A total of 52 matches were played and 146 goals were scored which gives 2,8 goals per match. Germany’s Célia Šašić and USA’s Carli Lloyd were the top goal scorers with six goals each. The 2019 Women’s World Cup will be played in France. Before then, we are looking forward to the Olympic games 2016 and the European Championships 2017.

Previous winners

These countries have previously won the tournament:

1991: United States
1995: Norway
1999: United States
2003: Germany
2007: Germany
2011: Japan
2015: United States

Sweden took silver in 2003 and bronze in 1991 and 2011.

Chile won Copa América 2015

It took shootout to determine a goalless final between the home team Chile and Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the Copa América 2015. After two missed penalty kicks by Argentina, Chile became South American champions for the first time.

The final

Last time Argentina won the Copa América was in 1993. Chile had never managed to win the tournament. Now they had the chance at home. The finale was characterized by rough play and seven yellow cards were handed out. Neither team managed to score after 90 minutes. Gonzalo Higuain, who plays in Italian team Napoli, Series A, was closest to score, but missed the goal in the last minute of the game. After a goalless overtime shootout awaited. Matías Fernández scores his first for Chile and Lionel Messi tied to 1-1. After Arturo Vidal scored, Higuain missed. 2-1 Chile. In the third round of penalties Charles Aranguiz scored on his penalty while Ever Banega missed his which meant 3-1 Chile and that they would be champions at home if Alexis Sánchez scored on his penalty, which he did.

Copa América 2015

We have experienced a thrilling tournament in Chile with a lot of good teams. The giants Argentina and Brazil are certainly not alone at the top, there are a number of teams that can challenge them. Chile showed it by winning the gold, Peru got the bronze after 2-0 against Paraguay. Brazil were eliminated by Paraguay after a shootout in the quarterfinals and Argentina could have faced the same destiny against  Colombia, but managed to make it through to the semis. We have seen a number of stars on the pitch, Messi and Neymar was perhaps the most well-known before the tournament started. Neymar however, got a suspension and Messi has not delivered as much in Argentina’s offense as we hoped. Peru’s Paolo Guerrero and the Chilean Eduardo Vargas were the top scorers of the tournament with 4 goals each. There were a total of 59 goals in 26 games, which gives an average of ~ 2.3 goals per game.

Copa América 2019 is played in Brazil. Before that the Copa América Centenario will be played next summer, in the United States, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the South American Championships. In 1916 Argentina hosted the tournament and came second after Uruguay. In 2016 Messi and his teammates get another chance to win a title with the national team. The harvest of final losses for this generation of Argentine footballers is getting a bit to big…

It is time for finals in the FIFA Women’s World Cup and Copa América 2015

Women's Football

Two of this summer’s biggest football tournaments are to be decided this weekend: The Women’s World Cup and the South American Championships, Copa América 205.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015: Japan vs USA in the final – a rerun of 2011 and 2012

July 5, Japan and USA will play the final of the Women’s World Cup of football 2015, just like they did in 2011. Then, Japan won after a dramatic overtime and penalty shootout. The year after, the teams met again in the final of the 2012 London Summer Olympics. That time, USA won 2-1. England and Germany will play for the bronze.

The semifinals

Both semifinals were decided by kind of odd events. If we start with USA versus Germany, the first half belonged to team USA. Germany was pressured, just as they were in the quarterfinal against France. For some reason, this is how the matches have looked like for Germany this year. They are usually a team machine over 90 minutes but something has not been quite right this tournament. However, with 30 minutes to go of the game, they got the chance to take the lead through a penalty shot. As usual, Celia Sasic stepped forward to take the shot. However, this time, she missed. Instead, it was USA who got the deciding goal from the penalty spot after a questionable decision by the referee. Alex Morgan ran into Annike Krahn outside the penalty box and for some reason the referee called for a penalty shot for USA. Carli Lloyd scored 1-0. In the 84th minute Kelley O Hara increased the lead to 2-0 and USA went through.

In the match between Japan and England, there were two penalties as well. Aya Miyama put her penalty shot away in the 33rd minute and Fara Williams tied the game seven minutes later. England put up a good fight against the current champions. The ending became a bitter tale though. At 90 minutes +2, England’s Laura Bassett attempted to clear the ball but instead put it into the crossbar and into her own net. 2-1 Japan and a devastated Bassett. England has done a good tournament though, eliminating Norway and Canada in the play offs.

Chicken Swedes held Germany as winners throughout the tournament. The final between Japan and USA should be a tight game and it is hard to bet on a winner here. However, Chicken Swedes place our money on USA. If they win, we can at least say that our national team played a tied match against the world champions in this tournament. 🙂

Chile versus Argentina in the 2015 Copa América final

July 4th the final of Copa América is played between Argentina and Chile. Both teams played an impressive game in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Argentina are favourites to becoming South American champions. However, they haven’t won Copa América since 1993. They lost the World Cup final against Germany last year.

The road to the final

Chile reached the final by winning their group, beating Ecuador 2-0, tied against Mexico (3-3) and crushing Bolivia 5-0. In the play offs they beat Uruguay 1-0 in a match most remembered for some dirty scenes we are hoping won’t repeat themself in the final. In the semifinal they beat Peru 2-1.

Argentina’s road to the final has been through few goals, except for in the semifinal. They won their group by playing a tied game (2-2) against Paraguay and two 1-0 victories against Uruguay and Jamaica. No goals from Lionel Messi in the group stage. However, in the play offs he scored his penalty shot when the goalless quarterfinal against Colombia was to be decided. He also did a good match in the semifinal where the team got their goal scoring going, beating Paraguay 6-1.

Although it will be a tight game, we believe that it is time for Argentina and Lionel Messi to win a title this year.

Sweden won the gold in UEFA Under 21 European Championship!

In the 1948 Olympics, players like Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordahl and Nils Liedholm got the only gold medal a Swedish football team has ever got in football. Since then, the medals have been few, with a silver at the World Cup at home 1958 and the bronze medal in the 1994 World Cup as the biggest successes. However, no gold medals since 1948. Until now. Thanks to a bunch of young players from different backgrounds and a dedicated coach who believed in his team, Sweden now has a gold medal from the 2015 FIFA Under 21 European Championships.

Aftermath of the 1994 Bronze medal

Sweden had a hard time building on the bronze in the 1994 FIFA World Cup in USA. They failed to qualify to both the 1996 European Championships and the 1998 World Cup. In the 2000 European Championships the team only got one point in the group stage. However, in the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 European Championships the team reached play offs once again. Sweden also qualified for the 2006 World Cup, the 2008 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup under coach Lars Lagerbäck who now coaches Iceland’s football team. Under the new coach Erik Hamrén Sweden qualified to the 2012 European Championships but failed to reach the 2014 World Cup after losing the playoff qualifier against Portugal. Right now Sweden are on their way to qualify for the 2016 World Cup in a relatively easy group, with the hardest opponents being Russia and Austria. However, many people have wondered what will happen when superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic are putting his shoes on the shelf. Questions about how things are going with regrowth and development of talents are being raised and for a long time it seemed like the rest of Europe and the world is running far ahead of us, both in terms of ranking but also in producing new talents. This changed June 30, 2015.

Sweden won the gold in the 2015 U21 European Championship

Sweden’s U21 team barely made it to the European Championship. They played tight qualification games against Turkey and France that they in the end managed to win. In the tournament on beforehand they were seen as the number four team in their group that consisted of Portugal, Italy and England. However, in the first game, Sweden managed to turn 0-1 to a 2-1 victory against Italy. Something was up with this team that constantly found ways to win. However, in game two, a late goal by England forced a dramatic last round in the group phase. Sweden managed to get 1-1 against Portugal, the same team that they would later beat in the final, which was enough to reach the playoffs. In the semifinal, their nordic rivals Denmark were favourites after winning their group. However, two quick goals in the first half meant 2-0 to Sweden after 45 minutes of play. Although Denmark got their chances and also a 1-2 goal, Sweden prevailed and won by 4-1. In the final, the odds were in Portugal’s favor after beating Germany in the semifinal 5-0. What would stop them from getting the easy win against the Swedes? The answer would be this: A blue and yellow team machine with great support from the crowd and a smart coach. A dedicated team consisting of players from different background but with one goal: To play the best football of their lives.

The final was decided by penalties

The first half was dominated by Portugal. Their passing and technical skills made them have the most of the possession and momentum. However, Sweden’s defenses were intact after 45 minutes of play. In the second half, the Portuguese started to act a bit nervous, shaken by the moment. Why couldn’t they score like they did in the semifinal? Sweden got the momentum and started to move the play up field. Attackers John Guidetti and Isaac Kiese Thelin got more chances to work with. However, after 90 minutes of play, the game was a goalless tie. 15 + 15 minutes of overtime awaited. In the overtime, Sweden kept their possession from the second half and Portugal’s players looked tired. However, there were no goals scored and the game had to be decided by a penalty shootout.

John Guidetti scored on the first penalty, distinctively and high. 1-0 Sweden.
Gonçalo Paciência tied on a just as good penalty. 1-1.
Isaac Kiese Thelin made no mistake. 2-1,
Tozé tied to 2-2.
Ludwig Augustinsson gave Sweden the lead once again. 3-2.
Ricardo Esgaio missed his penalty. 3-2 Sweden after three rounds. Two rounds to go.
Abdul Khalili, who had done a good match overall, missed his penalty. He tried to trick Portugal’s goalie, but ended up getting tricked himself.
João Mário scored for 3-3 with one round to go
Victor Nilsson Lindelöf shot a solid penalty 4-3. If Portugal were to miss the next penalty, the gold would go to Sweden.
Patrik Carlgren in the Swedish goal goes right and make the save on William Carvalhos penalty! Sweden won the 2015 U21 UEFA European Championship!

What this means for Sweden

The Swedish people have to wait for a long time between the successes in football. This time, the success meant a gold medal won by a team that had faith in each other and strived towards the same direction. No matter what background the players had or what the surname on their sweaters were, they were united in a common cause and found ways to win. In a time when the social climate is getting rougher, and the countries’ football is being questioned, this tournament gave Sweden hope. Hope for a future, where no matter who you are or where you are from, as long as you are willing to contribute, you will prevail and contribute to a society filled with joy and healthy competition instead of rivalry and misery.

These are the players who played the final under coach Håkan Ericson:

Goalie: Patrik Carlgren

Defenders: Victor Lindelöf, Alexander Milošević, Filip Helander, Ludwig Augustinsson, Joseph Baffo (substituted in 2nd half)

Midfield: Oscar Lewicki, Oscar Hiljemark, Abdullah Khalili, Simon Tibbling, Robin Quaison (substituted in 2nd half)

Attackers: John Guidetti, Isaac Kiese Thelin

Sweden and Swedish football thanks you. You have given the nation and one of our biggest sports hope.

Semifinals in Copa América and FIFA Women’s World Cup, final in the U21 European Championships

The play offs in the football tournaments this summer continuous. Four teams are ready for semifinals in Copa América and FIFA Women’s World Cup, while Sweden and Portugal will play the final in the FIFA Under 21 European Championships.

Argentina favourites for winning Copa América

The quarterfinals in Copa América have been played. Both Argentina’s and Brazil’s matches had to be decided by penalty shootouts. While Argentina came out on top against Colombia, Brazil lost against Paraguay. Chile beat Uruguay in a match that will mostly be remembered for a disgusting move from Chile’s Gonzalo Jara against Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani. While Cavani got a red card for slapping Jara, anyone that sees the clip below will understand why Cavani reacted the way he did. In the semifinals Chile will play against Peru June 30th, who won against Bolivia 3-1. Argentina will play Paraguay July 1st. From these teams, Lionel Messi’s Argentina are probably the strongest team, even if they have had problems getting their goal scoring going.

Germany eliminated France in the best game of the Women’s World Cup so far

In the Women’s World Cup in Canada the quarterfinals have been played and we have seen some tight matches, all decided by the odd goal, except for the match between Germany and France which had to be decided by penalty shootout. Carli Lloyd scored the only goal between USA and China in the 51:st minute. Japan continuous to win by the odd goal, beating Australia by 1-0. England eliminated the host nation Canada with a solid 2-1 win.

The match between France and Germany really was something to remember. France dominated the first half by playing a quick and creative offensive game. Germany was under pressure and it was pure luck that the standing after the first half was 0-0. In the second half, Germany could move the game up fields a bit, but could not produce any really chances on their offense. Instead, France scored 1-0 in the 64th minute. As the game progressed, it looked like France should come out on top. However, in a German attack, the ball hit the arm of a France defender which led to a penalty shot. Celia Sasic did no mistake and the match was tied 1-1 in the 84th minute. 30 minutes of overtime was ahead, and the phase continued to be high. Players limbed, bled and fought all over the field. France was closest to get a decider at the end of the second overtime quarter but failed to convert. Instead, it would take a shootout to core a winner.

In the shootout, the quality of the game was still high. We got to see hard, well placed penalty kicks. After four rounds all penalties were scored. Sasic scored her second goal of the game in the fifth. The last shooter for France was 21-year old Claire Lavogez. She was under pressure to score against 36-year old German veteran Nadine Angerer. However, her penalty was weak, Angerer throwed herself in the right direction and Germany prevailed. This was by far the best match of the tournament so far. High phase, great defense, goaltending and battles all over the field.

Germany will face team USA in the semifinal June 30 and Japan will play England July 1.

Sweden versus Portugal in the U21 final

In the European U21 Championships, Sweden will play the final against Portugal. Portugal are favourites after crushing Germany 5-0 in the semi final while Sweden made sure to score on all their chances against their nordic neighbours Denmark, winning 4-1. Sweden were underdogs in the semifinal and are underdogs in the final. If they win it will be a sensational victory for Swedish football who has been struggling to produce new talents from the generation after Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson, Fredrik Ljungberg and other players. No matter how the final will end, there is hope for a bright future for Swedish football!
